Reformation Day

luther

October 31st is Reformation Day for Christians.  On this day in 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church.  These were his protest against the indulgences of the Catholic church.  He didn’t believe that you could bargain or buy your way into heaven and this is what the Catholic church was teaching.  They were taking advantage of the people and Martin Luther had had enough.

Martin Luther was a German monk in Erfurt Germany.  He was totally dedicated to his God and in his service.  He would starve himself and spent hours on his cell floor, arms stretched out in a cross confessing his sins and seeking Gods forgiveness, but still he never found peace in his heart.  He tried to be perfect and earn his salvation, but it wasn’t until the rector of the Augustinian order explained salvation to him did he begin to understand.  He told him that God was not angry with him for his sin, but that he loved him.  He then sent him to the univeristy in Erfurt to become a priest and to teach.

Luther enjoyed his life as a priest and was thrilled when he was sent to Rome on buisiness.  But Rome was not as holy as Luther expected it to be.  The monks openly ridiculed the saints, jokes were made of the sacraments by the priests.  But even in Rome Martin did not lose his faith in God.  But now, he had some doubt about the church authority.  He went home and began to study God’s Word with a passion that he had never experienced before.  Over time in his studies he began to realize that the scriptures did not teach that one earned their salvation by good works.  He realized that salvation only came by believing in the death and resurrection of Christ Jesus.  All that the church was teaching was not what the scriptures he was reading.  He began to teach what he was learning at the University and this really caused sparks to fly.

To make a really long story short (which you can go here to read more), the church kicked Martin Luther out and he had to hide for several years.  It was during this time that other priest began to question the Catholic church’s teaching and began to uprise.  Many lost their life, others escaped.  While Martin was in hiding he began to translate the Latin Bible into German.  He believed that anybody should be able to read and study the scriptures theirselves.

Martin Luthers’ boldness to stand and fight for truth marked the beginning of the Reformation Church also known as the Protestant church.  Martin Luther paved the way for other reformers to come in and carry on the work of teaching other about the grace of God.  Works are not what get you into Heaven, it is only God’s grace.

Martin Luther was also known for his hymns.  The most popular hymn that he is still remembered for is also called the Battle Hymn of the Reformation or better known as A Mighty Fortress is our God (you can also listen at this link) Here is Steve Green singing on You Tube.  Thid hymn is my favorite of all the hymns!

So why is any of this important? Who really cares about a man who rebelled against the Catholic church over 400 years ago?  I think that as parents it is really important for us to pass on to our kids our christian heritage and knowing about people like Martin Luther is an important in our christian history.  You better appreciate the sacrifices made by these men.  Learning how God used people even 400 years to spread his love and teach his grace helps us to understand that he can use us also.

Teach your kids the message of Luther, God does not change!  His Grace is forever and his love is abundant.

Here are a few websites to use with your kids to teach them about Martin Luther and the Reformation.

What to do about Halloween?

I have debated as to whether or not I wanted to post on this topic, but it is a hot one lately since Halloween is next week.

I have tried for years to figure out what I believe is the right way for my family to treat Halloween.  Honestly, I hate it.  I hate everything about it. The scary creatures, ridiculous house decorations and creepy shows that come on TV.  I start dreading this time of year as soon as I start seeing the stores stock up on candy.

When I was little it wasn’t that big of a deal.  You didn’t have to worry about your babies getting scared in the stores by the creepy stuff hanging around.  Our neighbors didn’t put tomb stones in their front yard that screamed when you walked by.  It has definitly changed and is getting worse.  Click here to read how the Washington Post reported this change.

Up until a few years ago we lived out in the country miles from the main road.  On Halloween, I wouldn’t even mention it & it would be just a normal day for us.  We would sometimes decorate our house for Fall by putting pumpkins on the porch and hanging our favorite scarecrow on the front door.  My wooden set of Pilgrims would be nicely placed on the table in the entry way.  We were focusing on Thanksgiving & most of the time the kids didn’t even realize it was Halloween.  Then about a year and a half ago we moved into town.  Now I had trick or treaters to deal with.  I didn’t want my kids going out and I didn’t want the neighbor kids coming over.  The problem is, our house is one of the main hang outs on the street.  Everyone wants to be at our house, so they had all told my kids they were coming for tons of candy.  I had to think fast & figure out what we were to do.  Should we hide in our house with the lights off or what?  Maybe we could go somewhere.  No that wouldn’t work because everyone will be dressed up & it might scare my little ones.  When all else fails…PRAY!

I prayed about it, talked to my husband & we agreed that we were not going to hide in our house.  God had placed us in a neighborhood full of lost people and kids who were living in very disfunctional homes.  How could we react in a way to this holiday that would honor God and in a small way share the gospel with all of these people coming to our door?  We decided to hand out tracts.

I want our family to be a witness to those we live around & the biggest way we can do that is by the way we treat them.  If we hid in our house on Halloween our message would not be a welcoming one to them.  If we hide in our house on a regular basis and do not get to know our neighbors what does that say to them?  I don’t want my life to send a message that says, “I will only talk & asociate with those who share my beliefs.”  That is so far away from the message of grace and love that Jesus came to teach.  I’m so glad that he didn’t only hang out with those who believed he was the Messiah.  His message would not have spread & that was his mission; to teach us to love each other and love God with all our might.  A fruit of my love for Christ is my deep desire to share his love with others in whatever way I can.  Even if it means passing out candy at Halloween to children.  I don’t see this as celebrating Halloween.  We are not decorating, nor involved with the creepy traditions that come with Halloween.

I know that some who will read this will not agree.  That is o’k, you don’t have to agree.  Knowing the history of Halloween helped to make some decisions, but more importantly, knowing what scriptures teach about reaching out to the lost helped even more.

John MacArtur has written a fantastic article describing how Christians can react to Halloween and the history behind it.

Only the Strongest Survive

My husband, Scott has a blog.  I think it is fantastic, but then again I’m a little partial & rightfully so!

Anyway, he wrote a post today that I just had to share with you.

Have you ever really looked at trees?  I mean really looked at them as the scriptures describe them?  This post does that for you.  When we wonder if we are going to make it through life, God uses the trees to remind us that we can make it!

Seeking God Wholeheartedly

Psalms 119:10 (NET)

I seek you with all my heart, do not let me stray from your commands.

I don’t think people today understand how to do something wholeheartedly anymore.  There lacks a spirit of loyalty and dedication to the right causes.  God is not someone who is thought of by today’s world as someone to seek after with the dedication and energy that scripture teaches us.

When we truly seek God with our whole heart then we will see everything else in his perspective.  We will desire what he desires and we will desire to keep his commands.  We will still stray from him daily because we are so sinful, but if we are seeking him above anything else then we will seek repentance of our sin and change our ways.

Proverbs 2:4,5, “If you seek it like silver, and search for it like hidden treasure, then you will understand how to fear the Lord,” (NET)

Solomon tells his son how to remain pure in Proverbs.  Seek God out as if you were searching for a hidden treasure.  If you really want the treasure, so you only look for it when you are in the mood?  No, it is on your mind. You want that treasure and you are ready to search as long as it takes until you find it.  You are passionate and searching wholeheartedly.

Many times a revival will begin in our own hearts when we truly begin to seek God out.  We fall in love with him all over again and can’t learn enough about him.  I have experienced this many times; I have a renewed hunger and thirst for my God.  I really enjoy watching others experience this.  Several people very close to me are currently in the midst of a spiritual awakening in their lives and it is fabulous to see.  I have prayed for them for years and it is awesome to see those prayers answered and to see the growth in their life.

A desire for purity will bring you into a spirit of seeking God with your whole being.  You will desire to keep God’s commands and seek his forgiveness when you stray from him.  You will better recognize things that are distracting you from God and be able to change. None of this is as easy to do as it is to write it out, but I know it is possible because I have lived it myself.  I have also experienced straying from God and the consequences of that also.  It is a choice and will become a habit and way of life over time.  I’m still in the choice phase working to making it a way of life.  But it is my desire and my prayer for God to give me a heart that runs after him.

What does it look like when one seeks God wholeheartedly?  What do you think of first when you wake in the morning?  Is it your to-do list or is it your Lord Jesus?  When you encounter a difficult situation do you turn to your friends for counsel first or do you turn to your Lord for guidance?  What consumes you in your day?  What is your time most spent on?  What does your family think is important to you?

If your answers to these questions all point back to you rather than your relationship with God or you family I would take inventory of your priorities and begin cleaning things out that don’t really matter in God’s eyes.  I have found myself on my knees in the middle of the night weeping as I have realized how far from God I was.  I wept as I asked forgiveness of the many sins as the Lord brought them to my mind.  I then praised him and thanked him for the forgiveness through his blood shed for me.  “Give me a heart that runs after you and is wrapped around you. I want to love you God with all my heart, mind and strength.”

Spiritual Mountain Climbing

Over the years I have had my fair share of struggles & victories.  Many of my struggles were a result of my own lack of faith and maturity in the Lord.  My reaction to my circumstances produces nothing more than difficulty for myself.

One of my favorite Blogging Friends has written an excellent article on this.  Robin Sampson has endured an extrememly difficult year.  But through it all she has given God the glory for bringing her through.  Read her post here.

Encouragement to Single Moms

I can’t imagine the life of a single mom. I depend so greatly on my husband that the few times that he has been gone out of town I barely made it.  I have learned to expect his presence.  I know that if something happened to him & he was taken from us we would be o’k because my God’s strength is sufficient, but I don’t want to go there in my mind.  We moms who are married don’t think about our ministry to those moms who are not married.  But scripture talks often about the need to encourage and minister to the single moms & widows.  My husband has written an article encouraging the single moms, especially of boys.

Here is part of what he wrote;

I have been researching online, books on the fatherless, and the scriptures.  Everyone seems to come up with a cause, but only God’s word speaks of how to cope as a single mother.

Living in the Spirit, not in the Flesh

river-pebbles.jpg

One day while I was driving my daughters to their Bible Study at church, my mind began to drift back to difficult times in our past.  Things that happened we never dreamed could happen, but they did.  Then all of a sudden I began to think of how unfair it was for these things to happen to us.  I had a “What did I do to deserve that?” attitude.  I immediately captured that thought and threw it out.  It happened so fast that I almost didn’t catch it!  I was caught off guard…a good sign of living in the flesh rather than the Spirit.

Here is what Romans 8:5 says,

Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.”

Our family has seen a lot of adversity & turmoil the past 8 years. At times it seems like we are on a roller coaster of troubled times and just can’ t get off.  I’ve prayed David’s prayer many times from Psalms 123, “Have mercy on us O LORD.”  My flesh cries out saying, “Please stop this and let us live in easy times again.”  But, then the Spirit begins to speak to me, reminding me of my purpose as a daughter of the King.  My purpose is to bring glory to God.  I am to reveal God to others through the way I live my life.  More simply put; I am to make God look good.  I cannot do this if I am whinning, “It’s not fair!” all the time.

I have a choice.  When circumstances arrive I have a choice at my reaction.  I can glorify God through my response; react in the Spirit.  Or I can cry, pout, complain and react in the flesh.  Which one brings glory & honor to God?  the answer is so obvious, but not as easy as stated.

Here are a few “flesh” responses I have had in my life.

  • Why did you let this happen?

  • I don’t deserve this!

  • I don’t have time for this!

  • I want a break!

  • When will this be over?

  • Why is their life so easy & mine is so hard?

Any of those sound familiar?

Paul said in Romans 7:15,

I do not understand what I do.  For what I want to do, I do not do but what I hate I do.”

I’m right there with you Paul!  I know what my response should be, but I still react the wrong way!  Aack!  Will I ever react the right way & actually glorify my God?  The answer is yes, it is possible.

We learn from Jesus how we are to live.  Paul was a good example as he went through way more than most of us will ever go through in our life as a believer, but he learned from Christ how he should live.

John 12:27, Jesus replied to Andrew and Philip,

“Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour?’ No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour.  Father, glorify your name!”

Jesus knew what his ultimate purpose was, to glorify his Father.  He knew that God would be glorified through his own suffering.

Here are some Spirit responses I am learning to make;

  • How can I bring glory to you in this?

  • Teach me your way through this.

  • Help me to be faithful to you.

  • Father, help me!

I have learned that when I live in the Spirit I have joy & peace in the midst of terrible circumstances.  My valley experiences don’t feel like valley experiences.  When I am living in the Spirit I radiate God’s love & joy.  Others want to know how I can experience all that I have & still be so happy.  My mind must be on what the Spirit desires, not what the flesh desires.

 Make Psalm 73:26 your prayer.

“My  flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
